DID YOU KNOW . . .

  • Hearing loss is one of the most common work-related health problems.
  • Damage from exposure to noise is painless and may not show up for 10 years.
  • Most hearing loss is permanent and cannot be effectively treated.
  • One person out of 12 suffers from hearing loss, including more than one million children.

Many cases of hearing loss are PREVENTABLE. Take necessary PRECAUTIONS:

  • Sharp noises are a clear cause of hearing problems which can tear the eardrums.
  • Steady noise can produce long-term, irreversible effects which is cumulative and may show up only after years of exposure, when it is too late to do anything about it. The noise does not have to be painful to cause damage.
  • Most people's hearing sensitivity diminishes with age. A quarter of those between the ages 65-75 have lost part of their hearing. Almost half of those over 75 have lost part of their hearing.

What Noise Levels Are Too HIGH?
(The American Acedemy of Otolaryngology recommends the following 3 tests:)

  • Do you have to raise your voice to carry on a conversation?
  • Do you experience a sensation such as plugged ears after leaving the noisy area?
  • Does the noise produce a ringing in your ears? The sensation - like a sunburn - is a warning sign of overexposure.

Signs of Hearing LOSS:

  • You may find that you have trouble hearing when talking on the phone.
  • You may have difficulty distinguishing words with the consonants s, f, or sh.
  • You may find that you are turning up the television or radio volume louder than others like it.
  • You can't make out conversation against a noisy background.
